I've always enjoyed watching anime since I was a kid. It was good because of
two things. My first reason is pretty obvious and that is anime is great. Anyone from my generation practically grew up with anime because the 90s introduced great shows(Yu Yu Hakusho, Dragon Ball, etc.)
Second is that our peeps did the hard labor of translating the Japanese language to Tagalog which was a very effective decision. There were standouts of dubbed tagalog anime (Lupin the 3rd, Crayon Shin Chan) to some not-so good but pretty much understandable dubs. (Monster Rancher, Shaman King) It made anime much more accessible in those times where subtitles were things of myth.
Now flash forward to now where american cartoons also provide great entertainment (Spongebob Sq, Ben 10) and Tv5 and ABS-CBN began showing them in their morning (I think) slots. Now don't get me wrong, it's a wonderful idea but what really irks me is that they translated the shows to tagalog as well, thinking that "hey, we did this with anime? so why not translate this as well?" and so far, that decision sucked. To anyone who reads this crap I write, I know you may or may not agree with me but cmon!!! Have you seen Spongebob talking in tagalog?! WTF?!
I don't know but it just doesn't sound the same when translated. Maybe because I'm too used to watch the English versions of this shows that it bothers me so much. Maybe because literally translating English to Tagalog sometimes doesn't really work.
Maybe because I just HATE listening to Tagalog Spongebob. Maybe its a ploy to get our kids to love our national language again and stop them from turning to little, douchy, english speaking know-it-alls. Or maybe, just maybe, that it doesn't work. It would have been great if they just show as it is. We can understand English well enough right? I don't know bout you but this was NOT (and NEVER SHALL BE) a good idea.
And don't get me started on those movies that Tv5 has tagalized. Double WTF! Peace out.
